Both types of engines are provided with CVTs (Continuously Variable Transmission).
The CVT that Honda is providing with the new Civic has simulated gear shifts. As a result, it is not that boring like other conventional CVTs. Honda has tried to give the feel of a traditional automatic transmission in this Civic. It enhances the driving pleasure.
Fuel Economy
